Retail pack formats

Aquarium retail usually sells in 500 g to 5 kg units. We can quote bulk supply for you to pack locally, or packed units where that is more economical after freight.

Bag weights and how far small packs go

A typical planted-tank aquascape uses 1–2 kg of substrate topping per 10 litres of tank volume at a 20–30 mm layer depth, so a 5 kg retail bag suits most home aquariums up to roughly 40–50 litres. Pet-trade distributors packing their own retail units usually work backwards from this ratio to decide how many units a bulk sack of stone will yield before quoting shelf pricing to their own retail accounts.

Comparing natural pebble against dyed aquarium gravel

Dyed coloured gravel is cheaper and comes in a wider colour range, but the coating can wear or leach over years of use, which is why many planted-tank and aquascaping specialists specify natural, undyed stone instead. Natural pebble costs more per kilogram at the fine grades aquariums use, but it is a stable, permanent substrate with no coating to lose. We supply undyed stone only, so this comparison sits between us and dyed-gravel suppliers rather than within our own range.

Grading fines out of small sizes

Fine aquarium grades below 6 mm generate more dust and broken fragments during washing and sorting than coarser decorative sizes, so an additional sieving pass is needed to keep the fines percentage low enough for aquarium use. This extra step is why very fine aquarium grades cost proportionally more than the equivalent step up in size for garden or landscaping stone, and it is worth confirming with us before assuming linear pricing across sizes.

Samples and pre-shipment checks for aquarium-grade stone

Because aquarium stone sits in a closed water system, we recommend a sample check before bulk confirmation so you can verify size consistency and confirm there is no residual dust before packing. We wash and grade aquarium lines separately from garden-grade stone specifically to reduce fines that would otherwise cloud tank water on first fill.

Cleaning schedule for aquarium substrate stock

Aquarium pebble sold through retail does not need re-treatment before sale, but end users are typically advised to rinse thoroughly before adding it to a tank, since even well-washed stone picks up dust in transit and storage. Retailers selling loose or bagged aquarium substrate should store stock somewhere dry to avoid staining rather than any special maintenance regime on our end.

Aquarium pebbles compared with aquarium sand

Coarser aquarium pebble suits display tanks and larger fish that would otherwise disturb finer substrate, while aquarium sand is preferred for planted tanks and species that sift substrate. Natural pebble is heavier per bag for the same visual coverage than sand, so retail units are usually smaller by weight; we can grade pebble down towards the fine end of our range where a customer wants a pebble look with sand-like coverage.
