Choosing a white grade

Snow white is the brightest and most heavily sorted, so it carries the highest price per tonne. Off-white and cream grades cost less and hide dust far better outdoors, which is why experienced landscapers often specify them for large exposed areas. Tell us the end use and we will recommend the grade honestly rather than defaulting to the brightest one.

Keeping white consistent across shipments

Natural stone varies. We agree a sealed reference sample before the first order and grade every following batch against it, then send current-batch photographs before loading so nothing is a surprise at the port.

Coverage and depth for white gravel beds

At the usual 40–50 mm decorative depth, one tonne of 10–20 mm white pebbles covers roughly 15–18 square metres, dropping to 12–14 square metres for the chunkier 20–40 mm band. We always run the coverage maths against your quoted area before confirming tonnage, because ordering by weight without knowing depth is the single most common overspend we see from first-time buyers.

White pebbles versus limestone chippings and marble

Buyers comparing white options usually weigh three stones: limestone chippings (cheapest, warms to cream), white pebbles (rounded, mid-priced, calmer look than angular chippings), and marble chips or quartz (brightest, priciest). Rounded white pebbles sit in the middle on both cost and brightness, which is why they remain the default recommendation for garden centres stocking one general-purpose white line.

Retail bagging and container payload

White pebbles bag well because the colour reads clearly through a printed window pouch, and 20–25 kg woven or paper bags are our standard retail unit. On weight, a 20-foot container typically carries 24–26 tonnes of bagged pebbles before hitting road-legal payload limits, so we plan pallet counts against that ceiling rather than filling the box by volume alone.

Samples and pre-shipment inspection for white pebbles

White stone shows any off-colour or stained pieces more clearly than any other colour, so we send a sample set before a first order and current-batch photographs before every subsequent loading. This is standard practice on white lines specifically, not an optional add-on, because the cost of a disappointing white container is higher than on darker or mixed colours.

Sub-base preparation under white pebble beds

A compacted, well-drained sub-base with a weed membrane matters more under white stone than under darker colours, since soil and moisture wicking up through the base shows clearly against a pale surface. A 40–50 mm decorative depth is standard and also keeps the membrane from showing through against bright stone.

A tender document specifying white pebble should fix the exact grade — snow-white, off-white or cream — since these vary considerably in brightness and price, alongside size band and finish.
