Choosing stone that looks right wet

Pale stone can look washed out under moving water, while black and dark grey gain depth. If the feature is lit at night, larger stones read better than fine grades because the light catches individual surfaces.

Maintenance-friendly specification

Larger sizes are easier to lift out and rinse during cleaning. Where a pump intake sits low, avoid the finest grades entirely. Tell us the feature type and pump position and we will suggest a size band.

Sizing to protect pump intakes

Submersible pump strainers typically clog first on fines and sub-10 mm fragments that work loose from a stone bed, so we recommend a minimum 20–40 mm size directly around any pump intake even if finer decorative stone is used elsewhere in the feature. Buyers speccing a full water feature should treat the intake zone as a separate line item with its own size and washing requirement rather than assuming one grade suits the whole feature.

Coverage for pond bases versus edging

A pond base laid at 60–80 mm depth for visual coverage and to weight down a liner needs roughly 9–10 square metres per tonne of 40–70 mm stone, while edging and cobble accents are usually quoted by piece count or a smaller tonnage allowance rather than by area, since they sit as a single course rather than a full bed.

Winter and freeze-thaw notes for cold climates

In markets with regular freeze-thaw cycles, water sitting in the voids between pond and fountain stones can expand and gradually work smaller stones loose from the bed over several seasons; larger, denser stone in the 40 mm-plus range is more stable through repeated freezing than fine decorative gravel in permanently wet features. This is worth flagging to buyers reselling into colder climates who might otherwise default to a fine decorative grade for cost reasons.

Sample checks before ordering water feature stone

Colour and finish matter more around water than in a garden bed, since wet stone reads darker and glossier than the dry sample most buyers first see. We recommend a wetted sample check, or at minimum current-batch photographs of the stone wet, before confirming a large water feature order so there are no surprises once the feature is filled.

Edging and containment around water features

Loose pebble around a pond or fountain edge needs a defined containment line — a hard edge, buried liner return or raised kerb — otherwise stone gradually works into the water and settles on the pump intake or base, and soil migrates the other way into the display area. Specifying containment alongside the stone order is worth raising with the installer at design stage rather than after the feature is built.

Retail versus bulk supply for water feature stone

Smaller water feature and fountain stone sells well in retail bags for domestic customers finishing a bought fountain kit, while pond and larger feature bases are usually supplied loose in bulk to landscaping contractors. The two can be quoted from the same colour and size range but are packed differently, so tell us which channel the order is for when you enquire.
