How polished stone is graded

We typically offer three practical tiers of polished stone: a top retail grade sorted for even sheen and zero visible chips, a mid grade with minor natural sheen variation suited to bulk display and water features, and an economy grade for large-volume decorative use where individual stones are viewed from a distance. Buyers building a retail range usually stock the top grade in small units and the mid grade in larger bags to cover both price points.

Packing formats and unit economics

A 200 g pouch, a 1 kg mesh bag and a 5 kg bulk tub all sell into different retail channels, and freight cost per kilogram falls as unit size rises, so the choice of pack size is really a channel decision — small pouches for gift and craft retail, mesh bags for garden centre shelving, bulk tubs for landscaping counters. We quote packing separately from product so buyers can weigh unit cost against expected retail margin per channel.

Why polished stone needs different transit packing

Loose-packed polished stone that shifts inside a sack during a five- to six-week sea transit will develop dull, chipped facets by arrival regardless of the grade at loading. Tighter packing, reduced void space in the bag and, where requested, inner liners reduce this movement. This is a packing-stage decision, not a sorting-stage one, so it needs to be specified at order confirmation rather than assumed.

Cleaning and re-topping polished pebble displays

Polished stone in planters, retail displays and interior trays collects dust and loses visible shine faster than matte stone because gloss shows every mark. A periodic rinse restores most of the shine, and retailers selling polished stone as a display line should plan a small top-up stock to refresh trays rather than expecting the original polish to last indefinitely without any care.

Polished pebble against glass pebbles and coloured aggregates

Buyers occasionally compare polished natural stone with dyed glass pebbles or coloured resin aggregates. Glass and dyed products can offer brighter, more uniform colour but are manufactured rather than natural, typically cost more per tonne, and some markets restrict dyed or painted decorative stone in retail claims. Natural polished pebble costs less, is genuinely stone throughout, and is the more defensible claim on a retail pack labelled 'natural stone'.

Specifying polished pebble in a tender or interior design brief

An interior or landscape brief calling for polished pebble should state the base colour, size band and gloss level required, since 'polished pebble' covers everything from a light buff sheen to a full high-gloss finish, and the two look very different in a display tray or planter.
