Gabion Stone and Gabion Rock Fill
Gabion fill only works if the stone is bigger than the mesh aperture and consistent enough to pack tightly. We grade to the standard 60–200 mm bands and can sort a decorative face grade for walls that are meant to be seen.
- Graded 60–100 mm, 100–150 mm and 150–200 mm
- Hard, frost-resistant, non-friable stone
- Decorative face grade available
- Bulk tonnage or jumbo bags

Sizing to the mesh
Fill should be at least 1.5 times the mesh aperture. For a standard 80×100 mm mesh that means 100–150 mm stone. Undersized fill escapes and the wall slumps.
Face grade vs bulk fill
On visible walls, hand-packing a sorted face grade at the outer skin and using cheaper bulk fill behind it gives the finish at a fraction of the cost.
How much stone per basket, in practical terms
A common 1m × 1m × 0.5m gabion basket holds roughly 0.75–0.85 cubic metres of stone once packed, which at 1.5–1.6 tonnes per cubic metre for gabion-grade rock works out to around 1.1–1.3 tonnes per basket — always confirm basket dimensions before quoting tonnage on a wall run.
Alternative for lightweight or aesthetic walls
Where structural load or freight weight is a constraint, a smaller decorative face-grade stone in a shallower welded-mesh gabion panel, backed by a lighter core fill, achieves the same visual result at a fraction of the total tonnage of a full-depth gabion wall.
A common specification mistake
Ordering a single stone size for the whole wall rather than separating face grade from bulk fill. A uniform coarse grade throughout wastes money on the visible face, where a hand-packed, size-sorted layer looks far better for a small extra labour cost.
Pre-shipment inspection for fill grade
Before loading, we screen a sample from each production run to confirm the stone falls within the specified band and is hard, non-friable rock rather than material that will break down under load or weathering inside the cage. For visible wall projects we also check the face-grade sample separately from bulk fill, since a soft or crumbly stone in a load-bearing gabion wall is a structural risk, not just a cosmetic one.
Drainage behaviour in retaining wall use
Gabion walls are inherently free-draining, since the voids between stones let water pass through rather than build up hydrostatic pressure behind the wall — this is one of their main structural advantages over solid concrete retaining walls. This only holds if the fill stone itself is properly graded; too much fine material packed in with the coarse fill can partially clog the voids and reduce drainage performance over time.
Freeze-thaw performance of gabion fill
Hard, dense gabion-grade stone such as granite or basalt resists freeze-thaw cracking well over the wall's design life. Softer, more porous stone can absorb water and spall under repeated freezing, gradually reducing individual stone size within the cage. In cold climates we recommend specifying a hard, low-porosity stone type for gabion fill even where a softer, cheaper stone might be tempting for a large tonnage order.

Questions buyers ask about gabion stone
- What size stone goes in a gabion?
- Typically 100–150 mm for standard mesh. Confirm your mesh aperture and we will match the grade.
- How much stone does a gabion basket hold?
- Roughly 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre of basket volume. Send your basket count and dimensions for a tonnage figure.
- Can gabion stone be used underwater?
- Yes, with hard non-friable grades. Tell us the exposure and we will recommend a stone type.
- How is gabion stone freighted for large wall projects?
- As bulk tonnage in 20ft or 40ft containers, typically loaded to full payload (around 26–28 tonnes for a 20ft container) since gabion fill has no packaging or handling requirement beyond loose tipping.
- What maintenance does a gabion wall need?
- Very little — periodic checks that the wire mesh hasn't corroded or been damaged, and topping up any settlement in the fill after the first year as stone finds its final packed position.
- Can gabion stone be re-used from demolition or recycled sources?
- We supply freshly graded quarry stone rather than reclaimed material, since consistent sizing to the mesh aperture is critical for wall stability and recycled stone is rarely graded to spec.
- Do you test gabion fill stone before it ships?
- Yes — each run is screened to confirm it meets the specified size band and is hard, non-friable rock rather than material that could break down inside the cage.
- Does gabion fill drain well as a retaining wall?
- Yes — the voids between stones let water pass through rather than build up pressure behind the wall, which is a key structural advantage over solid concrete, provided the fill isn't overloaded with fine material that clogs the voids.
