How the range is organised

Products on this site are grouped by colour, by finish, by application and by volume so you can approach the range from whichever direction matches how you buy. A garden centre usually starts from colour and pack format; a contractor usually starts from application and tonnage; a distributor building a new range usually starts from the volume grouping to see wholesale and bulk options side by side.

Choosing between colours, finishes and shapes

• — White and pale tones suit modern minimal landscaping and hot climates, but show soil-splash staining sooner without a membrane
• — Black and dark tones read well as contrast edging and in water features, and are available in both polished and natural matte finish
• — Mixed-colour blends hide debris and dust between maintenance visits better than a single pale colour
• — Rounded river and beach pebble suits beds, planters and water features; angular chippings and gravel lock together for driveways and trafficked areas
• — Polished finishes cost more and are usually specified for feature areas rather than large ground-cover beds

Size bands and coverage guidance

Small grades from 5–12 mm are comfortable underfoot and suit paths, pot topping and fine decorative work, but show dust and get carried indoors on shoes. The 10–40 mm range is the workhorse band for garden beds, borders and retail bagged product — if you are stocking a single size to start with, 10–20 mm covers the widest set of uses. Larger 40–100 mm grades carry more visual weight and stay cleaner in open, dusty sites, while feature stones above 100 mm are placed individually rather than spread. As a rough guide, a 40–50 mm decorative layer needs roughly 75–90 kg per square metre depending on stone size and density — our resource guides cover the full calculation.

How to choose if you are not sure

Start with function: will the stone be walked on, driven on, submerged or only looked at? That answer narrows the shortlist to a shape and size band before colour is even discussed. Then factor in maintenance expectations and climate — pale stone in a high-rainfall market needs a membrane and more frequent rinsing than a mixed-tone blend in the same setting. Glossary of terms used across product pages

Size band

The stated minimum-to-maximum dimension range a product is graded to, e.g. 20–40 mm.

Polished / tumbled

Mechanically tumbled to a smooth, glossy surface, as opposed to a natural matte finish.

Aggregate

A general term for stone, gravel or crushed rock used as bulk landscaping or construction material.

Ground cover

Stone laid over soil or a membrane to suppress weeds and finish a bed, as opposed to a trafficked surface.
