White pebbles are usually laid a little shallower than mixed stone — around 35–40 mm — because a full 50 mm depth in pure white can look heavy and increases cost without improving the visual effect. At 40 mm depth, a tonne of 10–20 mm white pebble covers approximately 16–17 square metres. Buyers planning retail bag ranges should note that snow-white grades weigh slightly more per bag than off-white grades of the same volume, which affects freight cost per unit sold.

Climate and staining considerations

In wet or humid climates, white stone laid directly onto soil without a membrane will show soil-splash staining within one or two seasons regardless of grade. In dusty or high-pollen environments, larger sizes (20–40 mm and above) collect less airborne dust between stones than fine grades and stay visually cleaner between maintenance rinses.
