Quartz vs marble vs limestone

Quartz is hardest and stays brightest but costs more per tonne. Marble is whiter on day one and softer. Limestone is the budget option and warms to cream over time. For small high-visibility areas quartz repays the premium.

Keeping it white

Any pale stone greens up in permanent shade. Good drainage, a membrane underneath and an occasional rinse keep quartz looking new for years.

Colour and clarity when wet

Quartz gains a subtle glassy sheen when wet without darkening the way limestone or granite grades do, since it has almost no porosity — this stable wet appearance is why it is specified for fountains and aquariums where the stone is permanently submerged.

Coverage per tonne

One tonne of 15–25 mm quartz covers roughly 13–15 square metres at 40 mm depth; because quartz is denser than limestone, buyers switching from a limestone quote to quartz at the same budget should expect slightly less area covered for the same spend.

A common buyer mistake

Choosing the largest quartz size for an aquarium or terrarium. Coarse 40–60 mm pieces leave gaps that trap waste and are hard to clean; 8–15 mm is the practical size for planted and fish tanks.

Container loading and pack formats

Quartz is one of the denser natural stones we supply, so a 20ft container of loose bulk quartz typically reaches its payload limit around 25–26 tonnes. For retail and interior channels we also pack the same graded stock into smaller 1–5 kg craft packs and 20 kg garden bags, so a distributor supplying both a garden centre and an aquarium or décor retailer can source everything from one container.

Sample approval and inspection

Because quartz is specified largely for brightness and clarity, we check each batch against an approved sample under both dry and wet conditions before packing, since some buyers want the driest, whitest tone and others want the subtle glassy look it takes on wet. Off-colour or visibly stained pieces are sorted out at this stage rather than left for the buyer to find in the bag.

Retail bag versus bulk aquarium supply

Aquarium and terrarium retailers typically want small, dust-free, pre-washed packs in the 1–5 kg range that are ready to rinse and use straight from the bag, while landscape and garden centre buyers take 20–25 kg bags or loose bulk tonnage of the same graded stone. We wash aquarium-bound packs to a higher standard specifically to reduce cloudy water on first fill.
