Marble chips vs white pebbles

Chips are crushed and angular, so they interlock and stay where you put them — better for slopes and trafficked edges. White pebbles are rounded and softer looking, better for beds and pot topping. Buyers who sell both usually run 8–12 mm chips and 20–40 mm pebbles side by side.

Washing matters

Unwashed marble carries a fine white dust that dulls the stone and cakes in the bag. We wash and re-screen before packing, which is the single biggest difference between a bag that sells and one that sits.

Coverage and bag maths

At a 30 mm bed depth, common for driveway topping, one 25 kg bag of 10–20 mm marble chips covers about 0.4 square metres, and one tonne covers roughly 16–18 square metres — more than pebble products because angular chips pack tighter. Print this on retail bags; it's the number that stops a customer buying three bags short.

Retail versus bulk formats for the same grade

The identical 8–12 mm washed white chip can be sold as loose bulk tonnage to landscapers, as jumbo bags to builders' merchants, and as printed 20 kg retail bags with a header card for garden centre shelving — we pack all three formats from the same production run so quality never varies by channel.

A common specification mistake

Buyers sometimes order marble chips for a driveway expecting them to behave like crushed stone. Marble chips are softer and can polish smooth under repeated tyre traffic, turning slippery when wet — fine for a garden path, worth flagging for a daily-use driveway.

Container loading for mixed grades

Marble chips are relatively light per volume compared with granite or basalt, so a 20ft container of washed 8–20 mm grades typically reaches its weight limit around 22–24 tonnes while still leaving some visual space in the box. Buyers combining several size bands or colours in one container should confirm the weight split against each grade rather than assuming equal tonnage per band, since finer grades pack denser than coarser ones.

Drainage behaviour under chip beds

Angular marble chips drain quickly on their own, but a compacted, slightly cambered sub-base beneath them prevents pooling in heavier rain. Where chips sit over clay or poorly draining soil, a thin gravel drainage layer beneath the membrane stops the base turning soft and the chips sinking unevenly. This matters more for driveway topping than for shallow decorative beds, where minor pooling causes no real problem.

Frost and cold-climate behaviour

Marble is dense and largely non-porous, so it resists freeze-thaw damage far better than softer, more porous stones — chips do not typically crack or flake over winter cycles. The main cold-weather issue is practical rather than structural: fine 2–4 mm chips can shift under snow-clearing equipment, so slightly coarser 8–12 mm grades are the safer specification for paths that get shovelled or ploughed regularly.
