Choosing a size band

10–20 mm is the standard driveway band: large enough to stay put, small enough to walk on. 6–10 mm suits paths and 20–40 mm suits drainage. Depth is usually 40–50 mm decorative over a compacted sub-base.

Washed vs unwashed

Washed material looks brighter and does not dust in dry weather; unwashed is cheaper for buried drainage work. Tell us the end use and we quote the right one instead of defaulting to the dearer grade.

Coverage per tonne

At the standard 40–50 mm driveway depth, one tonne of 10–20 mm crushed granite covers roughly 13–15 square metres; the 6–10 mm path grade stretches slightly further at the same depth since it packs with fewer voids.

Crushed granite versus pea gravel for driveways

Pea gravel is cheaper and rounder, so it rolls and rutts under tyres; crushed granite's angular faces interlock and hold their line far better under vehicle weight, which is the main reason we steer driveway enquiries toward crushed stone rather than pea gravel regardless of budget pressure.

Retail bagging and dust control

Washed crushed granite bags cleanly with minimal dust residue in the pack, which matters for retail shelf presentation; unwashed material is fine for bulk drainage fill but leaves a visible dust film inside clear or light-coloured retail bags.

Pre-shipment sample and inspection

Each production run of crushed granite is screened against the agreed size band and checked for excess fines before loading, with a sample or batch photograph sent for approval on first orders. For washed grades we confirm the wash has cleared dust residue, since a washed sample that still shows fines in the bag is the most common complaint we test against before a shipment leaves the yard.

Drainage and sub-base preparation

Crushed granite performs best over a compacted, free-draining sub-base with adequate fall away from buildings, since standing water beneath a driveway surface can undermine compaction over time even though the angular surface stone itself drains well. Where the underlying ground is heavy clay, a coarser drainage layer beneath the decorative topping prevents the sub-base staying saturated after rain and softening under vehicle weight.

Cold-climate and freeze-thaw performance

Hard granite resists freeze-thaw cracking well and does not itself degrade over winter cycles. The practical cold-weather issue is the same as with any angular stone: a poorly drained base can heave as trapped water freezes, distorting the surface. Specifying free-draining sub-base preparation protects the finished driveway far more effectively than choosing a particular size band of granite.
