Decorative Gravel for Beds, Paths and Ground Cover

Decorative gravel is the fastest-moving landscape line in most retail ranges because it solves a small job cheaply. The buying decision is colour first, size second, so we hold both tightly across repeat shipments.

  • White, gold, grey, black, pink and mixed tones
  • Washed and screened to a tight size band
  • Retail-ready 20–25 kg bags or jumbo bags
  • Batch photographs before every loading

Colour sells the bag

In a garden centre aisle, decorative gravel is chosen from two metres away on colour alone. Gold and white outsell everything else in warm climates; grey and slate lead in northern markets. Stock the two extremes before you add mid-tones.

Size band and walkability

8–12 mm is the safest all-round retail size: small enough to look fine in a pot, large enough not to track indoors. Below 5 mm it migrates; above 20 mm it stops looking like gravel and starts looking like pebbles.

Washed versus unwashed

Unwashed gravel arrives with dust that dulls the colour and shows in a bag. For anything retail-facing, specify washed — the price difference is small and the shelf appearance difference is not.

Weed control under gravel

Gravel does not stop weeds on its own. A woven membrane under 50 mm of gravel does. Buyers who skip the membrane come back within a season, so it is worth pairing the two products in your range.

Packing for retail

20 kg is the standard retail bag weight most chains specify because it is the heaviest a customer will lift alone. We can print your own bag artwork or supply plain bags for your own labelling.

Container loading maths

A 20ft container of decorative gravel typically carries 24–26 tonnes depending on size band and moisture content at loading, which for an 8–12 mm retail grade at a standard 50 mm bed depth works out to enough stone for roughly 300 square metres of finished bed. Buyers can use this rough conversion to size an initial order against expected retail sell-through rather than guessing at tonnage.

Sample and batch photo approval

For colour-critical retail ranges we send a batch photograph of the screened stock before bagging, particularly for pale colours like white and gold where dust or slight tonal shift is most visible on a shelf. This is a quick step that avoids a garden centre receiving a shipment that reads noticeably differently from the display sample used to sell it in-store.

Edging and containment for retail-installed beds

Fine decorative gravel migrates onto lawns and paths without a firm edge restraint, and this is the single most common after-sales question we hear repeated back from retail customers through resellers. Recommending a simple timber or metal edging strip alongside the gravel at point of sale — even as a small add-on line — reduces returns and complaints considerably more than any change to the gravel itself.

Wholesale, bulk and export details

This product is supplied on the same commercial basis as the rest of our range: quantity confirmed against container payload, packing quoted separately and documentation prepared to your broker's brief.

Questions buyers ask about decorative gravel

How deep should decorative gravel be laid?
50 mm over a weed membrane for beds, 75 mm where the gravel is walked on regularly.
How much gravel do I need per square metre?
Roughly 80–90 kg per square metre at 50 mm depth. Send the area and we will convert it to tonnage.
What size decorative gravel is best?
8–12 mm for general beds and retail bags, 10–20 mm where you want more visual texture.
Does decorative gravel stop weeds?
Only in combination with a membrane underneath. Gravel alone suppresses but does not prevent.
Can you supply printed retail bags?
Yes. We pack to your bag weight and print your artwork, or supply plain bags for your own labelling.
What is the minimum order?
One 20 ft container, which can be split across several colours and size bands.
Roughly how much bed area does a container of decorative gravel cover?
At a standard 50 mm depth, a 20ft container carrying 24–26 tonnes of 8–12 mm gravel covers roughly 300 square metres, a useful rough figure for sizing a retail order against expected sell-through.
What's the most common complaint retail customers have with decorative gravel?
Gravel migrating onto lawns or paths without an edge restraint. Recommending simple edging alongside the gravel at point of sale reduces this considerably.
