Colour sells the bag

In a garden centre aisle, decorative gravel is chosen from two metres away on colour alone. Gold and white outsell everything else in warm climates; grey and slate lead in northern markets. Stock the two extremes before you add mid-tones.

Size band and walkability

8–12 mm is the safest all-round retail size: small enough to look fine in a pot, large enough not to track indoors. Below 5 mm it migrates; above 20 mm it stops looking like gravel and starts looking like pebbles.

Washed versus unwashed

Unwashed gravel arrives with dust that dulls the colour and shows in a bag. For anything retail-facing, specify washed — the price difference is small and the shelf appearance difference is not.

Weed control under gravel

Gravel does not stop weeds on its own. A woven membrane under 50 mm of gravel does. Buyers who skip the membrane come back within a season, so it is worth pairing the two products in your range.

Packing for retail

20 kg is the standard retail bag weight most chains specify because it is the heaviest a customer will lift alone. We can print your own bag artwork or supply plain bags for your own labelling.

Container loading maths

A 20ft container of decorative gravel typically carries 24–26 tonnes depending on size band and moisture content at loading, which for an 8–12 mm retail grade at a standard 50 mm bed depth works out to enough stone for roughly 300 square metres of finished bed. Buyers can use this rough conversion to size an initial order against expected retail sell-through rather than guessing at tonnage.

Sample and batch photo approval

For colour-critical retail ranges we send a batch photograph of the screened stock before bagging, particularly for pale colours like white and gold where dust or slight tonal shift is most visible on a shelf. This is a quick step that avoids a garden centre receiving a shipment that reads noticeably differently from the display sample used to sell it in-store.

Edging and containment for retail-installed beds

Fine decorative gravel migrates onto lawns and paths without a firm edge restraint, and this is the single most common after-sales question we hear repeated back from retail customers through resellers. Recommending a simple timber or metal edging strip alongside the gravel at point of sale — even as a small add-on line — reduces returns and complaints considerably more than any change to the gravel itself.
