Beach pebbles versus river pebbles

Both are water-worn, but beach pebbles are typically flatter and more uniform because wave action works them from every angle; river pebbles are rounder and more varied. If the specification says flat, ask for beach grade.

Why they look better wet

Beach pebbles darken and gain contrast when wet, which is why they are the default around water features and in dry creek beds that occasionally run. Buyers comparing dry samples often underestimate the finished look.

Creek pebbles as a lower-cost alternative

Creek pebbles carry a similar look at a lower sort standard and price. Where the stone is spread over a large bed rather than seen close up, they usually make more commercial sense than a premium beach grade.

Shape sorting adds cost

Uniform flat stone requires hand-sorting, which is the main cost difference between grades. Say whether the order is display-facing or bulk fill and we sort to the level the job needs.

Packing for interiors

Interior and décor buyers usually want smaller retail packs, dust-free washing and tighter shape sorting. That is a different specification from landscape supply of the same stone — tell us the channel up front.

Container loading maths

A 20ft container of mixed 20–70 mm beach pebble typically carries 24–25 tonnes as loose bulk or jumbo bags, which at a standard 50 mm bed depth covers roughly 220–250 square metres depending on the size band mix. This rough figure helps a buyer size an initial container order against a known project area or expected retail sell-through before requesting a detailed quote.

Sample and pre-shipment inspection

Because beach pebble is specified largely for shape and flatness, we send a sample or batch photograph showing the actual sort standard before a bulk order is packed, particularly for display-facing or interior orders where shape consistency is judged closely. Bulk landscape orders are checked to a lower, less time-intensive sort standard appropriate to beds seen from a distance.

Edging and containment for feature beds

Flat beach pebble beds benefit from a firm edge restraint at borders with lawn or paving, since the flat profile can migrate under foot traffic or heavy rain runoff more readily than a rounded pebble of similar size sits still under its own weight. A simple steel or timber edge at bed margins keeps the pebble contained and reduces the need for regular raking back into place.
