How weathering changes boulder appearance

Sandstone boulders soften and pick up lichen and moss within a couple of seasons outdoors, which most designers consider an improvement; granite boulders barely change over decades. If a project needs an immediately 'aged' look rather than one that develops naturally, sandstone or a pre-weathered quartzite selection is the better pick.

Freight and payload planning for mixed piece sizes

A container mixing 200–400 mm accent stones with 600 mm+ feature boulders is planned by cumulative weight, not by counting pieces — a handful of large boulders can use most of the legal payload while leaving visible space in the box, so we confirm the piece list against tonnage before finalising an order.

A common buyer mistake

Ordering boulders by diameter alone without checking base flatness for seating or stacking use. Two stones of the same nominal size can behave very differently once placed — we flag pieces with a naturally flat face in the photographs we send for approval.

Pre-shipment inspection and piece approval

Every boulder order goes through individual piece photography and numbering before loading, but for larger commercial orders we also send an inspection report confirming there are no structural cracks or fault lines running through pieces intended for seating or stacked features, since a hidden fracture only becomes obvious once a boulder is placed and put under load or weather exposure.

Drainage around placed boulders

Large boulders set into beds or lawns can trap water against their base if the surrounding ground doesn't drain away, which encourages moss and staining on the lower face faster than on the exposed upper surface — sometimes desirable for an aged look, sometimes not. Where a client wants an even weathering appearance, bedding boulders on a free-draining gravel base rather than directly on soil evens out the moisture exposure across the stone.

Boulders versus cast concrete feature rocks

Cast concrete feature rocks cost considerably less and weigh less for the same visual scale, which matters where crane access or structural load is limited, but they read as artificial up close and do not weather the way natural stone does over years. For budget-constrained projects at a distance from the viewer, concrete is a reasonable substitute; for close-up feature placement, the difference is usually obvious and natural stone is worth the premium.
