Pool Pebbles — Stone for Pool Surrounds and Pebble Interiors
Pool work is unforgiving: stone has to hold colour in chlorinated water, stay cool enough to walk on and not shed fines into the filtration. We grade pool pebble to a tight size range and wash it hard so it arrives ready to use.
- Chlorine and salt tolerant natural stone
- Washed free of fines that clog filtration
- Light tones that stay cooler underfoot
- 3–8 mm interior grades and 20–40 mm surround grades

Interior finish grades
Pebble interiors need a narrow 3–8 mm range with consistent shape so the trowelled surface is even. Oversized stone in the mix shows up as a rough patch that cannot be fixed afterwards.
Surrounds and heat
Dark stone gets hot. For barefoot areas in strong sun, light greys, creams and whites are the safe specification; keep the darker tones for planted beds nearby.
Coverage for interior finishes
Pebble interior finishes are applied at roughly 10–12 mm depth over a bond coat, using approximately 15–18 kg of graded pebble per square metre depending on pebble size — always confirm the applicator's specified rate before ordering tonnage, since under-ordering mid-application is a costly delay on a full pool re-plaster.
Alternative light-toned surround options
Where a client wants the cooling benefit of light stone but a smoother finish than pebble, a cream or white marble chip in the same 10–20 mm band gives similar heat performance with a more uniform crushed texture around a pool coping.
A common mistake on new installations
Using standard pea gravel or garden-grade stone for a pool interior finish. Interior pebble needs to be free of soluble minerals and consistently sized to trowel evenly — ordinary landscaping gravel can leach or sit unevenly in the finish.
Sample and pre-shipment inspection
Pool finish work is unforgiving of size inconsistency, so we screen-test interior grade samples against the agreed 3–8 mm band before any production run and send the sample to the applicator for approval, not just the buyer. For surrounds and coping stone we also check for soluble minerals that could leach or stain over years of chlorinated water contact, which is a different quality check from ordinary landscape stone.
Container loading for moisture-controlled grades
Pool pebble interior grades are packed in sealed, moisture-controlled bags rather than loose bulk, since consistent moisture content affects how the pebble binds into the applied finish. A 20ft container of bagged interior grade typically carries 20–22 tonnes, slightly less than an equivalent loose bulk load of surround-grade stone, because the bagging and moisture control add handling volume.
Cleaning and re-topping around pool surrounds
Loose stone surrounds and coping beds around a pool accumulate sunscreen residue, leaf debris and algae in shaded, damp spots, and benefit from an occasional rinse or light pressure wash to keep pale grades looking bright. Surround beds settle over time from foot traffic and splash displacement, so a top-up every couple of years keeps the depth consistent, particularly around steps and entry points where displacement is heaviest.

Questions buyers ask about pool pebbles
- Which pebble size is used for pool interiors?
- Usually 3–6 mm or 5–8 mm depending on the finish texture your applicator wants.
- Will chlorine bleach the stone?
- Natural quartz, marble and granite grades hold up well. We will steer you away from any grade that will not.
- Do you supply blended colours for pool finishes?
- Yes, to your ratio. Send the blend and we will match it against a sealed reference sample.
- How much pool pebble do I need for an interior refinish?
- Roughly 15–18 kg per square metre of pool surface at standard 10–12 mm application depth; a typical residential pool interior runs 50–70 square metres.
- How is pool pebble packed and freighted?
- In moisture-controlled 20–25 kg bags or jumbo bags rather than loose bulk, since fines and dust need to stay controlled right up to the point of mixing with the bond coat.
- Does pool pebble need resealing over time?
- Interior pebble finishes are typically not sealed the way tile is, but surrounds and coping in porous stone benefit from resealing every few years to resist staining from sunscreen and chlorine residue.
- Do you inspect pool pebble before shipping for interior finishes?
- Yes — interior grade samples are screen-tested against the agreed size band and sent to the applicator for approval, and surround stone is checked for soluble minerals that could stain over years of chlorinated exposure.
- How often do pool surrounds need topping up?
- Loose surround beds settle from foot traffic and splash displacement, so a top-up every couple of years, particularly around steps and entry points, keeps the depth even.
