Pick by colour, then by size

Colour decides whether a bag sells; size decides whether it performs. Bright whites and blacks move fastest in retail, honey and mixed tones suit naturalistic planting, and grey reads best against modern hard landscaping.

Matching size to visual scale

Small 4–8 mm stone reads as texture from a distance and suits tight borders; 60–100 mm and larger reads as individual rock and needs open space around each piece to avoid looking cluttered. Mixing two adjacent size bands within one bed, rather than one uniform size, is what most professional designs actually specify.

Retail merchandising formats

The same decorative rock grade typically ships as loose bulk for landscapers, printed 20 kg bags for garden centre aisles, and occasionally as small 5 kg scoop-top bags for impulse purchase near the till — we can split one container order across all three pack sizes.

A common buyer mistake

Ordering one colour and one size for an entire site. Sites that combine two colours and two adjacent size bands sell through faster at retail because they photograph better for the customer's own before/after garden shots, which drives repeat purchase.

Container loading across mixed colours and sizes

A 20ft container of mixed decorative rock typically carries 24–26 tonnes, and the practical limit is usually weight rather than space once more than two size bands are combined. We plan the tonnage split by size band first, since larger stone at the same weight takes up proportionally more container volume, then confirm the colour ratio within each band so the final load matches the quote line by line.

Drainage beneath decorative beds

Decorative rock beds perform best over a compacted, slightly cambered base with a permeable membrane, allowing rainwater to pass through rather than pool on the surface. In beds without adequate fall, water can sit between larger stones for days after rain, encouraging algae and staining pale colours. A simple drainage channel or French drain at the low point of a bed solves this at minimal extra cost.

Weed suppression under mixed-size beds

A woven permeable membrane is essential under any decorative rock bed, but it needs pinning down properly at joins and edges — weeds most often establish where membrane overlaps have separated, not through the fabric itself. For beds mixing two size bands, lay the membrane once under the full area rather than patching separate membrane pieces under each size zone, which is where most gaps occur.
