Matte black or polished black

Matte black reads as a soft charcoal when dry and is the usual choice for outdoor beds. Polished black stays glossy and reads almost jet black, especially wet, and is preferred for interiors, display and water features. Both come from natural stone; the difference is tumbling time.

Buying black in volume

Black is denser than most cream grades, so tonnage per pallet and container payload work out differently. We calculate the load against your route's weight limit before quoting so the container is not under-filled or over-weight.

Coverage per tonne at typical depths

Black pebbles run slightly denser than pale limestone-family stone, so a tonne of 20–40 mm black covers around 11–13 square metres at 50 mm depth, a little less than the equivalent white or cream grade. We factor this density difference into every quote so buyers comparing prices per tonne across colours are comparing like-for-like coverage.

Black pebbles versus basalt chippings

Buyers sometimes ask for basalt as a black alternative. Basalt chippings are angular and cheaper per tonne but look harsher and show scuffing on light stone paths; rounded black pebbles cost more but read smoother and stay looking deliberate rather than industrial. We stock the pebble form, not basalt chip, and will say so plainly rather than substituting.

Tumbling a dark stone reveals hairline chips that lighter stone hides, so every polished black batch gets a second manual pass after the drum before bagging. This adds a day to production but is why our polished black holds up in retail packs where every visible stone matters.
