For a driveway, angular chippings lock better underfoot than rounded pebbles. For a water feature or planting bed, rounded river stone reads better and is easier to walk on. Angular chippings versus rounded cobbles for load-bearing areas

Angular 5–10 mm chippings interlock under compaction and are the right choice for parking bays, service yards and anywhere vehicles will sit or turn. Rounded 60–120 mm cobbles are decorative rather than structural — they read as feature stone at path edges, around tree pits and along drainage swales, but they will roll and rut if a vehicle crosses them. Specifying the wrong shape for a trafficked area is the most common on-site complaint we hear passed back from installers.

Container payload for mixed commercial orders

A standard 20-foot container carries roughly 24–26 tonnes of decorative stone before it reaches the road weight limit for most destination markets, which is reached well before the box is visually full. On a mixed order of pebbles, cobbles and chippings this means the line-by-line tonnage split matters more than the total order value — heavier, denser cobbles should be loaded low and even across the floor, with lighter bagged material stacked above.

Quality control for public-realm and named projects

For architect-specified or public-realm work we sort against a retained reference sample rather than a general grade description, and we can hold back a signed sample set at the packing stage so a second phase, ordered months later, is checked against the same physical stone rather than against a written spec sheet alone. This matters most on projects with a visible colour or size tolerance written into the contract.

Drainage and sub-base preparation

Landscaping stone performs best over a properly prepared sub-base: compacted hardcore or MOT-type aggregate for trafficked areas, with a geotextile separation layer before the decorative stone goes down, and a fall built in so surface water drains away rather than pooling. Skipping sub-base preparation is the most common reason a landscaping stone installation looks poor within a year, with stone sinking into soft ground or migrating into mud. We are happy to advise on sub-base depth for the size and use you specify.

Landscaping stone against poured or resin-bound alternatives

Compared with poured concrete or resin-bound surfacing, loose landscaping stone costs less to lay, drains naturally without additional falls or channels, and can be topped up or partially replaced without breaking out a hard surface. The trade-off is that loose stone needs edging to stay contained and periodic top-up as material compacts or migrates, whereas resin-bound surfacing is fixed and low-maintenance but far more expensive to install and to repair. Most specifiers choose loose stone for beds and lower-traffic areas and reserve resin or paving for heavy pedestrian routes.

Specifying landscaping stone in a tender

A tender specification for landscaping stone should state stone type and origin, size band, colour tolerance, wash and finish, laid depth, and required tonnage with a percentage allowance for wastage, rather than a general description such as 'decorative stone'. Naming an approved sample or reference batch in the tender document avoids substitution disputes later. We can supply written specification wording and a sealed reference sample to support a tender submission.
